Design
The Sega Master System II, released in 1990, was a streamlined version of Sega’s original Master System. Designed as a cost-effective entry into gaming, it featured a compact black casing with rounded edges and a simpler design. It eliminated the cartridge slot cover and card slot of its predecessor, focusing solely on cartridge-based games. The console was bundled with iconic games like Alex Kidd in Miracle World, making it a hit with budget-conscious gamers.
Compatibility
The Master System II is compatible with the full library of Master System cartridge games. However, it does not support the original Master System’s Sega Card games or peripherals like the 3D glasses due to the removal of the card slot. Whilst not technically region locked, some cartridges are different sizes and will not fit in the Master System II cartridge slot. All PAL releases will work on this system.
Media
The Master System II exclusively uses game cartridges. Unlike its predecessor, it removed multimedia features in favour of a more affordable, gaming-focused experience.
Size
The Master System II measures approximately 2.2 inches tall, 11 inches wide, and weighs about 3 pounds. Its compact size made it easy to integrate into any entertainment setup.
Controllers
The Master System II supports two controllers through its front-facing ports. The controllers are simple and durable, featuring a D-pad and two buttons. They were designed for straightforward, pick-up-and-play gaming.
TV Connection
Sega Master System connects to TV’s via an analogue RF lead, with the TV tuned to channel 36. This is the same connection as standard aerial TV. Some modern TV’s no longer support this connection.
